Location: Secret Room
- Returning to present time in winter. After the briefing session with “Adam” has ended, the evening of the same day -

...HmmM. I had no idEA. So fine’s debut match was titled “Wonder GaME”?

During autumn of last yeAR, until the time they destroyed Shu-niisan’s ValkyrIE, fine was quite inconspicuoUS...

But I did some detailed research on fiNE, and I never found any records that show a DreamFes of that name ever took plaCE.

...Hmm~MM, maybe I was mistakEN?

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Not at all. In the end, “Wonder Game” was never held.

For a number of reasons, the proposal I worked so hard to finalize was never made reality.

That’s why I was happy to receive a request for Switch to perform in a live of the same name.

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

HmmM. So that’s why you accepted the request in a heartbeAT, without even notifying us of IT. This clears things up a little bIT.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Yes. I can see that I acted without consideration, and I’ll reflect on my behaviour, so please forgive me.

But I truly was so happy… When I asked about it, I found out that the proposal for this “Wonder Game” was drafted by Nagisa-kun and Hiyori-kun.

It seems that those two haven’t forgotten about those days… They haven’t forgotten fine. It feels like they treasure it even now, and I have to admit I was a bit moved by that.

Even though it ended in tragedy, it’s not like nothing fun ever happened last year at all.

And yet, everyone always acts like the past was nothing but bad memories.

But. There definitely were some happy times, too. I feel like I was reminded of that now.

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

...I’m sure there weRE, for fiNE. But for uS, who were trampled underfoOT, it was “nothing but bad memoriES”.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

I don’t believe that. Aren’t the days you spent together as the “Five Oddballs” happy memories for you?

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

They’re nOT. When I remember those daYS, I don’t get nostalgIC. I am instead assaulted by regreTS… Wondering if things could have turned out different if we’d realized sooner what was going on and worked out countermeasurES.

In the eND, a victor from fine like you will never understand our feelinGS.

You may say it ended in trageDY, buT… All of you surely gained something from iT, while we experienced nothing but loSS.

As for this plAN, and digging up the past in order to glorify iT, and reminiscing about it cheerfulLY…

This “Wonder GaME”, makes me repulsed just hearing about iT.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

...WeLL, while the name may be the saME, the details of this plan seem to differ from the one from back thEN.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Ah, yes. It seems that way. Fine’s “Wonder Game” and our “Wonder Game” this year are apparently entirely different things.

The one from last year was, as the name suggests, a live based on “Alice in Wonderland”.

The scale was a lot smaller, and it was conceived as a solo live for fine.

Compared to that, the one this year is a large-scale event with agencies and idols from all over the country participating, that extends over a period of time…

Theme-wise, if it had to be one or the other, I’d say it’s more based on “Alice through the Looking-Glass”.[1]

Sora Harukawa School Dialogue Render.png

? Sora isn’t that knowledgeable about this, what’s the difference between “Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass”?

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Fufu. Sora-kun, you shouldn’t just play video games all the time, and read some books every once in a while.

Roughly speaking. While “Wonderland” is structurally based on card games, “Looking-Glass” is patterned after chess.

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

CheSS… All the more reason that this project is more suitable for Knights than SwitCH, I thiNK.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Ahaha. Don’t you think they probably don’t want to be reminded of when they were Chess anymore?

Sora Harukawa School Dialogue Render.png

? What do you mean? Isn’t Knights modeled after the chess piece of the same name~?

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

AaH, Sora doesn’t know about thIS.

Knights branched off from a mass unit called CheSS. The reason they are modeled after a chess piece is a relic of that tiME.

In any caSE. The difference between “Wonderland” and “Looking-Glass” isn’t just the motifs that run through the entire booKS.

The decades in which they were written and the details vaRY, as well as the reception by socieTY.

“Alice in Wonderland” was a book the author Lewis Carroll wrote for a little girl he lovED.

“Through the Looking-Glass” was written due to the popularity “Wonderland” enjoyed among the massES… In other worDS, it was written for woRK.

By the time “Looking-Glass” was writtEN, the beloved girl “Wonderland” was written fOR, AliCE, had grown up alreaDY… From the perspective of the authOR, she had transformed into a different persON.

The beloved heroine of his story only existed in his memories anymoRE.

Maybe it is due to that feeling of loss and sadness that “Looking-Glass” is filled with a sorrow akin to the breathing of a siGH…

Among readers who expected a fun children’s book like “WonderlaND”, it was relatively unpopulAR.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

I like it a lot, though~. “Wonderland” is so freewheeling that reading it makes my head spin, or rather, it makes me feel unwell.

“Through the Looking-Glass” is intellectually more well-organized, and because it is easier to understand, I find it more fun to read.

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

That’s the difference between the handmade and the industriAL, whether one or the other is better is in the eye of the beholdER.

While the latter is more well-made as an industrial produCT, the former has more loVE.

The appraisal by the reader will also vary depending on what they want in a good stoRY.

Because “Wonderland” came firST, “Looking-Glass” lacks in surprise and emotional depth on the first read-through in comparisON.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

Yes. As an author I deeply respect once said, “A genius is a genius only until the moment the readers finish reading his debut work”.[2]

If you look at it subjectively rather than objectively, a genius can’t stay a genius forever.

Sora Harukawa School Dialogue Render.png

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

...Ju~st kidding. Sora-kun seems to have gotten bored, so let’s end the literature discussion here.

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

AgreED. And at this poiNT, the atmosphere is all wrong to say “we are turning down the project” after aLL. We accepted the jOB, so we will carry it out to the utmost of our abiliTY.

Also it seems like “Wonder Game” is a profoundly memorabLE, dear project to yOU, SenpAI.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

It is. Well, as I said before, the details of this project are vastly different from the original one, though.

I’ve always loved “Wonderland” and “Looking-Glass” as stories, so just knowing that the theme is based on them makes me excited already.

Let’s do our best. Especially since this is a project on an unprecedented scale.

And if we can make it a success, it’ll be great for Switch’s track record, I think.

Natsume Sakasaki School Dialogue Render.png

...As usuAL, you talk like this doesn’t concern yOU.

Oh weLL. I may not personally be invested in thIS, but we’ll be going head to head with Eden, who are said to be the strongest in this whole countRY…

I definitely won’t hold baCK. Let’s get psyched and face them head-ON.

Let’s make “Wonder Game” a succeSS. Even if it was “only written for woRK”, I’d feel bad for the heroine if we don’t make this a delightful stoRY.

Tsumugi Aoba School Dialogue Render.png

  1. This doesn’t come through due to the English titles, but in Japanese the books are named quite similarly. They’re named “Alice in the Land of Wonder” and “Alice in the Land of Mirrors”. The characters shorten this to “Wonderland” and “Mirrorland” respectively.
  2. I was unable to find a source for this quote in either Japanese nor English. As far as I can tell, no one ever said this except for Akira when he made Tsumugi say it just now. If anyone has a source on this, tell me please.
