Maguro is Madara Mikejima's younger sister, though their relationship is very strained. She has a chronic illness and is physically disabled, and uses a wheelchair to get around. In order to be kept safe by her family, she resides at a rehabilitation center affiliated with the police force.
Maguro and her brother's strained relationship went back to when they were children, as Madara promised he would fix her illness but failed to do so.[1] He rarely visits her at her rehabilitation center, to the point the secretaries give him nasty looks for his lack of visits.[2] In Walking in Darkness, Madara worries that she will have to take over his 'role' in the family, which will kill her, and he hopes to regain that 'role' one day.

Personality[]

Maguro is a shut-in (hikikomori) who is sensitive and introverted[3], but is hostile towards Madara, often spitting at him if he scolds her or simply says something she doesn't like. Madara does not speak highly of her, and they have a strained relationship to this day.
She has a good relationship with Mitsuru Tenma, who often pays her visits. He is very sensitive to her feelings and is often very eager to help her out. It's implied that Maguro has confided in Mitsuru quite a lot, to the point he's even called Madara out for having never been a big brother to her at all. He calls her by the nickname "Guu~chan" (ぐ~ちゃん), because "Maa~chan" (ま~ちゃん) is too similar to Madara's name.[2] Mitsuru praises her as being much smarter than him and believes that just being around her might make him smarter as well.[4]

Etymology[]

Maguro's first name (真黑) means "pure black". It is also homophonous with まぐろ or マグロ, meaning "tuna". Mikejima (三毛縞) means "tricolor stripes", as mike (三毛) means "calico" or "a cat with three colors of fur" (often calico or tortoiseshell cats) and jima (縞) means "stripes".

Trivia[]

  • In Submarine, we learn that she has communicated with Chiaki on tokusatsu message boards, sometimes asking about how Madara is doing. She prefers the villain characters, whether the humanoids (kaijin) or monsters (kaijuu).
  • Maguro's name was first revealed in Parallel World.
  • She's recently become a fan of Ra*bits, and occasionally requests the rehabilitation center she resides at to attend their lives.[5]
  • She's acquainted with the younger of Kohaku's older sisters.[6]
  • Madara has stated that she is Mitsuru's age, which would make her around 17 years old during Parallel World.[4]
