Early Years[]
His vampiric disease as a child prevented him from going outdoors into the sun. Rather than living a childhood playing outside and making friends, he instead spent his time inside reading excessively[1]. As he grew up, he accumulated vast amounts of knowledge and intelligence that rivaled that of adults. As a result, many adults often sought him out for advice to solve their problems.
"Beautiful" and intelligent, he would wander around graveyards and adults would come to him for advice, and he accidentally developed a following of devotees who would live by his every word despite his young age[2]. It is around this time that his childhood friend Keito began to fear him, and distance himself from Rei, however, Keito regrets being so coldhearted and calls himself undeserving of the childhood friend label.
Early childhood, elementary school, middle school, upbringing, etc.
War Era[]
Living a life of emotional labor, by the time he entered Yumenosaki Academy, Rei had become rather disillusioned with the world, although still unable to deny his core values. By his second year, Rei had become bored of the world, and constantly sought out excitement.
Before Eichi took over, Rei used to be the student council president[3]. Rei said that he only took over this position because Keito asked him to, as he still considered Keito a friend from childhood. Keito stated that having Rei serve as the student council president was indented to both raise the reputation it had among students, as well as cause them to fear him and develop a grudge[4][5].
However, when Keito attempts to strengthen the student body's resentment for Rei, Rei takes advantage of a loophole in the rules Keito had set for the underground live he staged. Keito had intended to paint Rei as an irresponsible low-life using DEADMANS as a vessel, using Rei's continuous search for excitement against him. However, against Keito's expectations, Rei is aware of the trap set for him and leaves the unit before the live itself starts[6][7].
Rei's year spent "studying abroad" was spent largely:
- Meeting with researchers overseas to seek a cure for he and Ritsu's condition;
- Resolving conflicts out of obligation and offering help to those who asked it of him;
- Performing and doing idol work;
- And, once the War began, resolving conflicts in Yumenosaki's sister schools across the globe.
During The War, Rei’s compulsion to help others was used against him, his execution conspired by Ritsu and Eichi[8]. Using Ritsu’s advice, Eichi intentionally caused trouble in Yumenosaki’s sister schools, Rei’s compassion making him unable to not travel abroad to lend his help[9].
After being worn thin from being dragged around the globe, the demand to solve problems far too great for a single individual weakened Rei. With Rei’s power over Yumenosaki Academy lost after spending most of his time abroad, Eichi was able to overtake his position as student council president in the school.
