Profile Outfits Story Index

NEGI is Hitsugi Kurone's older sister, and identifies herself to be the summoned soul of Hitsugi's late sister. While they share a body and she often assists Hitsugi in his work, NEGI does not consider herself part of Yumenosaki Academy's producer course. She instead prefers to spend her time singing at the underground live house, and has even gained a fan base. She acts as if she were a frail corpse, which could be a testament to her necromancy skills or to her origin.

Regarding Official Data

As of Jun 6th 2022, NEGI does not have a character page on the official website. Data contributed to the information section should be considered as unofficial and collected by fans.

Quick Answers

Are NEGI and Hitsugi Kurone the same person? toggle section
No, while they share a body, NEGI and Hitsugi Kurone are two different people. NEGI identifies herself to be the summoned soul of Hitsugi's late older sister. Compared to Hitsugi, NEGI is calm-headed, confident, and rational, and often ends up handling important matters in place of her little brother. They are rarely co-conscious, with one being "asleep" while the other is awake. They typically communicate with each other through diary entries on their phone.

Is NEGI an idol? toggle section
NEGI is not a professional idol, nor is she enrolled in Yumenosaki Academy's Idol Course, but she performs as an underground idol at the underground live house. Despite being relatively new, she has amassed a substantial fanbase, and typically sings songs that were popular in the past in a modern arrangement, rather than modern idol songs.

What is the meaning behind NEGI's name? toggle section
NEGI's name is derived from the last syllable in Hitsugi's name, Kuro[ne] Hitsu[gi], which combines to her single name NEGI. She has not commented on why this is the case, and later reveals the true origin of her name in the story "Blackjack".

Appearance[]

NEGI is identical to Hitsugi in almost every way, as they share the same body. The only difference between Hitsugi and NEGI when it comes to appearance is the skirt NEGI prefers to wear.

She is of short stature and has an equally small build. Her hair is dark brown and falls just past her shoulders, seemingly unstyled. Her eyes are a bright yellow. NEGI wears the Yumenosaki girls' uniform, notable features of which being the blue tie denoting that she is a second year, the white vest she wears, and the first two buttons of her shirt being undone.

Personality[]

NEGI is generally a calm and confident person, and speaks in a very clear manner. Much like Hitsugi, NEGI tends to be upfront with her wants, needs, and likes; however, most people do not understand NEGI's strange comments and requests.

NEGI can be rather rude to others, and doesn't shy away from taunting others or telling people to shut up, often openly ignoring people if she is not interested in the conversation or person. She also has a rather negative outlook on life, resulting in a pessimistic mood when she talks with others.

Etymology[]

NEGI's name is derived from the last syllable in Hitsugi's name, Kurone Hitsugi, which combines to her single name NEGI. She has not commented on why this is the case.

Spoilers:

She later reveals the true origin of her name comes from her designated role as a Negi (禰宜), a Shinto priest. She has a different real name, but called herself "NEGI" sarcastically, out of cynicism. However, since her growth as an idol, she hopes to put the hateful meaning aside and give her name new context, as an idol.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Hitsugi calls NEGI "Onee-chan", denoting how although both NEGI and Hitsugi share the same body, they are completely different people.
    • While they share the same body, it is stated that Hitsugi can not talk to NEGI directly.
      • NEGI mentioned that when Hitsugi is "awake", she is not, and she can not remember what happens when Hitsugi is awake unless she specifically "searches" for the information in her head.[2]
      • Despite their barrier of communication, NEGI has mentioned that Hitsugi tells her everything. They primarily communicate through diary entries on their phone, though it is shown that NEGI usually does not care about his ramblings.
    • Mika asked NEGI if they are like Shu and Mademoiselle, however NEGI did not know who Shu was and did not answer the question.[2]
    • The reason behind NEGI and Hitsugi sharing a body is never explicitly stated, but Hitsugi wholeheartedly believes that NEGI is the summoned soul of his deceased sister. He admits that he has no way to prove that NEGI isn't a result of a dissociative disorder, and that this isn't just a delusion of his.
  • Hitsugi mentions that Gatekeeper has praised NEGI for her necromancy skills.
    • It is said NEGI is particularly skilled in resuscitation when it comes to necromancy. This is exhibited when NEGI has UNDEAD perform a song composed by Arashi's deceased friend.
  • NEGI is legally able to drive in Australia, thanks to Gatekeeper's help. While she has practiced a bit in secret, she essentially only knows how to drive on paper.

Commentary[]

Main Scenario Writer's Comments[]

"Since Uncle Gatekeeper was designed clearly to be a Gatekeeper no matter how you viewed him, I designed him (and her?) as an "opponent that approaches you with the face of an ally". And so initially, I had planned for them to simply be defeated as evils and die, but... As voices for those who have been discarded as "unnecessary", it felt too cruel to just pretend that they didn't exist." —Akira (Official Works, Artbook)[3]
