Aira Shiratori[]

Fellow members of the Basketball Club. Mao is one of the few idols in Ensemble Square that Aira isn't star-struck with. He describes Mao as "different," which allows him to hang out with Mao casually. Mao takes it as a compliment that he's easy to approach.[1]

In the prologue of Walking in Darkness, it is implied that Mao pays attention to Aira's grades: Aira failed multiple exams, which made Mao a little exasperated as a Student Council member. The two share a friendly and close relationship with the rest of the Basketball Club, shown when Mao and Aira once pulled out money to buy everyone in the club snacks and chocolates from New York.[2]

Midori Takamine[]

Enstars![]

Fellow members of the Basketball Club. Midori feels at ease with Mao around the club, as he isn't as overwhelmed by him as he is by the loud energy of Subaru and Chiaki. He sees Mao as "above" him, believing Mao is more important and renowned than him. Mao feels the opposite, as he sees the two of them as equal human beings. Despite Mao's attempts to make Midori understand this, Midori still highly respects his status, as he thinks it's amazing that Mao can manage to work as part of the student council and as an idol, all while managing his studies.
In the sub story Birth of Basukebon, Mao finds Midori alone in the gym, cleaning basketballs instead of returning home. In order to motivate him to finish his work before midnight, he plays a character through one the basketballs (given the name "Basket-bon") under Anzu's advice. This successfully motivates Midori. From then on, Midori occasionally asks Mao to pretend to be Basket-bon for motivation, as heard in his conversation with Mao in his voice list.
After SS in winter, the two start to learn more about each other and become a bit closer. Mao opens up to Midori about crying from the affection he received from his family after winning SS, and asks Midori to keep it a secret from everyone else. Midori says he sees Mao as the ideal because he's so nice and friendly to everyone, which also makes him hard to read at times. It's because of this he says he can't see Mao ever getting angry. However, Mao sees Midori to be the same kind of a person as he is, so he encourages Midori not to distance himself because it makes him feel lonely. By the end of the year the two have built a friendly bond with one another, coming to a point where Midori will gladly indulge with Mao in their common interest in manga and comics.

As the one who kept the Ninja Association from disbanding, Shinobu holds Mao in high regards, equal to that of Anzu. In Youth RADIO, it's mentioned that he visits Mao's home often during break days.
In Orihime and Hikoboshi, Shinobu states his faith and admiration for Mao many times, and tells the story of how Mao helped him form the Ninja Association. Shinobu considers Mao a role model, and Mao in turn says that he wishes he had a younger brother like Shinobu.

Enstars!![]

In War at the End of Century, Sora, along with Koga and Yuuta, blackmail Mao into approving a DreFes for the Ryuu-ou-sen by having Sora dress up as a girl and tackle Mao into a precarious position and photographing it, making it seem like he was "having an intimate date with a schoolgirl in his office." Despite his annoyance, Mao decides to give the DreFes his approval by leaving the document on his desk and leaving the room intentionally for them to do with it as they wished. [3]

Enstars!![]

Tori Himemiya[]

Enstars![]

Fellow members of the Student Council. Tori often slips up and calls Mao "Saru" (monkey) even if he does try to be respectful; but Mao doesn't seem to care and even prefers Tori to be casual around him. Mao is shown to handle Tori's demeanor smoothly and take no offense to his grating childishness (like in the main story when Tori acts like a sore loser and tells Yuzuru to "kill" Mao right in front him, or when he says Mao must like bananas because he's a "monkey"), allowing the two a flexible friendship. When they shop for presents together in Agents, Tori lets Mao hold one of his hands as Anzu holds the other, and he compares the two to his parents.

Anzu[]

Enstars![]

Being a member of Trickstar—the unit Anzu is closest to—Mao is one of the people Anzu is on good terms with. He is the first to take the initiative to escort Anzu home when it's late, and even gets acquainted with her family, intruding them for dinner sometimes. They share a similarly delicate position in Trickstar throughout the Main Story, and Mao thinks of Anzu as his fellow hard worker. Mao once noted that he loves Anzu's voice, and he feels at ease when he hears it, telling her to speak clearly because it'll make him happy if he doesn't miss out on anything she says.
Mao first met Anzu after the rest of the Trickstar carried a collapsed Anzu to the infirmary. They met again when Mao came looking for Anzu and found her holding her knees, terrified inside the Garden Terrace Kitchen, and reached out to her.
Mao once stated that Anzu used to be more nervous. He described her as having always looked like she was going to die, as if her heart was about to burst from uneasiness.[7] He notes that she always appeared exhausted from anxiety whenever she'd send Trickstar to the "battlefield," but has since relaxed considerably since Trickstar has come so far. Mao said that the trust she developed in Trickstar and seeing Anzu at ease makes him happy. Mao remarked that even though Anzu may not talk much, she isn’t heartless, and when she does speak it's as if everything she says is full of meaning. He says that although she seemed like the pushover type, she is actually quite stubborn.
Mao helped Anzu with the plans for Tanabata Festival until it reached perfection.[8] While Mao helped Anzu with her work, Anzu requested him to call her by her name, as she didn't want to be called "Transfer Student" any longer. Later, Mao consoled a crying Anzu as she was overwhelmed with being asked to plan the S1 event, saying that she didn't know why she was chosen for it. He tells her he feels she's grown apart from Trickstar in producing for other units and taking on other jobs. But at the same time, he felt happy that they were both stumbling and struggling sometimes in the same way, feeling that they are connected. He encourages her to keep growing and working together to move forward so they can stand side-by-side in a much brighter, sparkling future. He becomes jealous when she hugs Shinobu "to heal herself," but laughs it off, saying it was fine if she got pumped back up and that there was no way he could win against cute things like little kids and animals. In multiple instances of the story, Shinobu was convinced that the two of them were "on a date" or "having a moment." Mao and Anzu were also in charge of monitoring the Setsubun Festival together. Mao has mentioned that Anzu's hard work motivates him to work harder, and that it feels like she is always beside him. During the Chocolat Fes, Mao describes Anzu as more of a busybody than he is, and says that she even has an aura that makes him want to rely on her unconditionally. However, Mao doesn't wish to rely on her all the time, and wishes that she would allow herself to rely on him as well. He hopes to develop a give-and-take relationship with her. Following the Chocolat Fes, Mao was invited to dinner by Anzu's family. There, the two made chicken stew for Trickstar together, and Mao helped with the cleaning.
Mao often finds himself in awkward situations with Anzu through pure accident. Once when hanging tanzaku for the Tanabata Festival, he thought that he made Anzu cry when praising her, although she was actually smiling. When worriedly descending the stairs, he lost his balance and tripped on top of her when she ran forward to catch him. They seem to share a teasing relationship sometimes, as Anzu shakes the ladder while Mao is hanging up the decorations after he compares her to a reliable mom, and she on pulls his hair when Mao misunderstands her apology and remarks jokingly that he feels lucky he gets to touch something he barely felt before after he fell on top of her. He ended up prostrating himself desperately to Anzu once the rest of Trickstar found out. Another awkward situation was when he found Anzu in his futon upon waking up in Trickstar's inn room, then becoming embarrassed when Anzu bent over in her yukata and he didn't know where to look.

Enstars!![]

When Mao talked with Anzu in the StuCo room in his Idol story, he said that they saw each other so often last year, but since Anzu had been moved into the Producer Course they didn't have may chances to talk. When Tori entered the StuCo room, Mao seemed disappointed because at first it was just the two of them there. When Anzu wore a suit inside of the ES building in the elevator he thought that she looks unfamiliar and he was shocked, because in his eyes she looked like an adult.
It's revealed that Mao may harbor feelings towards Anzu, as he was in shock when he thought that Anzu would be getting married when he saw her hold a wedding magazine in Ring A Bell. In the same event he and Midori acted like heartbroken adults as they drank juice. When Leo mentioned that he was composing a song about heartbreak, Midori said that Mao was hit with a stray bullet from Leo, even though Leo didn't intend to hurt him.

Arashi Narukami[]

Enstars![]

Fellow classmates and on relatively good terms. Arashi calls him Mao-chan, which Mao initially seemed to dislike, saying that it made him "feel like a kid," but eventually he warmed up to the nickname. Arashi finds him to be someone friendly and easy to talk to, while Mao sees her to be someone who's "surprisingly an upright person who's good at sympathizing with others." He feels that Arashi is the one that keeps Knights all together, which Arashi feels to be an overestimate. At times Mao will think of her when met with cute things, remembering how those are the type of things she likes.[9][10]

HiMERU[]

Hokuto Hidaka[]

Enstars![]

Members of the same unit, Trickstar. Mao often has to play mediator to Subaru and Hokuto's constant disagreements. During the Sakura Festival, after Hokuto got into an argument with Subaru, Mao tells Hokuto that he needs to try understanding Subaru's behavior better,[11] saying that even if Hokuto's correct he needs to sympathise with how Subaru thinks more.
Mao and Hokuto are shown to trust and rely on each other a lot. Mao thinks of Hokuto as a person with a strong sense of responsibility, even for things that are beyond his control, and in return, Hokuto views Mao as someone he can relax around whenever Mao's in charge, though he often scolds Mao for not relying on Trickstar more and for taking everything on himself.

They also both have a pollen allergy and can relate to other in that sense.

Makoto Yuuki[]

Enstars![]

Members of the same unit, Trickstar. The two share a close relationship, as shown in Revolution when Mao stood up to defend Makoto. Mao strongly believes that Makoto underestimates himself, and that he is really very talented.
Before they ended up together in Trickstar, both of them got sorted into the same class, 1-B. Makoto's first impression of Mao wasn't exactly good. In Rocket Start, Mao was prompted by the student council to give an abolishment notice for the Game Club. Makoto, who was confused, asked for more elaboration and help from Mao before being rejected. Mao said that he was only told to give information and the rest of it was not his problem. He told Makoto to handle his club problems by himself, as he was just a mere messenger.
(Advancing Heart) Mao Isara CG

Mao giving an abolishment notice for the Game Club

This results in Makoto revising his opinion on Mao; he considers Mao to be an awful person, contradicting his initial thought of him being kind and "bright person who is always in the center of everyone in class." Mao then claimed that he wasn't that kind, he just happened to be quick-witted. Later on, Mao helped Makoto to save the Game Club from being abolished, and Makoto apologized for immediately thinking that Mao was a cruel person without understanding his difficult position first. To show his gratitude, Makoto helped Mao to find 1-B representatives for the Venus Cup. Since Ritsu—who was supposed to be one of the 1-B representatives—already belonged to a unit, Makoto offered himself as a substitute, as he happened to be free and wanted to return Mao's kindness. Performing together for the first time in Venus Cup allowed them to form a friendly and supportive relationship with Trickstar.
In the Ensemble Stars Trickstar livestream course, Mao and Makoto are described as best friends who trust each other deeply.

Natsume Sakasaki[]

Enstars![]

Natsume is an acquaintance of Mao's. However, he implies that he sees Mao as his natural enemy; a detestable person who fits right into the spot meant for him—perhaps implying that Mao stole Natsume's place in Trickstar. Although, it appears that Mao doesn't know about these feelings of Natsume's. Natsume says that Mao is the same type as Anzu, the type not easily affected by magic.[12]

Enstars!![]

Ritsu Sakuma[]

Enstars![]

Childhood friends and neighbors. Mao often takes care of Ritsu. Ritsu cares deeply about Mao and enjoys being spoiled by him. Ritsu has deep affection for Mao and considers him his family. When Ritsu was younger, Mao was one of his only friends, as Ritsu wasn't encouraged to get involved with anyone outside of his family due to his sickness. To Ritsu, Mao was the person who gave him warmth and dragged him into the light after Rei began to leave him behind. Mao ensured Ritsu continued to attend school during that time.
They met for the first time in elementary school, when the school asked Mao to pick up Ritsu and bring him to school since he hadn't been attending for a while.[13] Ritsu nicknamed Mao "Maa~kun", and Mao nicknamed Ritsu "Ricchan". However, as Mao grew older, he began to more often call Ritsu by his first name when talking to or about him, only calling him "Ricchan" very occasionally. Mao says that their fight in Band Ensemble was the first time they've ever fought.
Aware that he's unsociable and lacks the power to keep people he loves by his side, Ritsu clings to Mao, as he is the only friend he has. This often causes Ritsu to expect the worst, even when Mao makes trivial mistakes such as forgetting to bring Ritsu his juice, believing it's a sign that their friendship is ending. He's often paranoid that Mao is his friend only out of obligation and that Mao shouldn't have gotten involved with him from the start, resulting in Ritsu often lashing out at him. Ritsu also describes himself as feeling out of place, and that Mao is akin to the sunlight that burns him, referencing that he should have stayed "in the dark" where nobody could have hurt him.
As children, Mao made a promise to Ritsu to always keep him as his top priority. After their fight in Band Ensemble, when Ritsu was ready to give up on friendship, it was Mao who reached out to him. He and Rei's support encouraged him to change his perspective and hold onto the things he loves. They exchange promises again; Mao repeats his promise, and Ritsu promises he would never hate Mao, even if the world comes to hates him. In his words, "I'll be the only one to stay by Maa~kun's side."
Towards the end of his second year, Ritsu began to expand his social circle and teasingly asked if it made Mao jealous that Ritsu didn't need to rely solely on him anymore, but Mao only expressed how grateful and relieved he felt that Ritsu was finally making other friends, as this was something he was previously worried about.

Souma Kanzaki[]

Enstars![]

Enstars!![]

Subaru Akehoshi[]

Enstars![]

Members of the same unit, Trickstar. Subaru has given him the nickname "Sally," a play on his family name, Isara. Mao often has to play mediator to Subaru and Hokuto's constant disagreements. Mao is one of the people who sees through Subaru's bright and chatty persona, understanding how smart and observant Subaru actually is. In one of Subaru's management stories, Subaru plays dumb and pretends that the magazine lent to him by Chiaki is too complicated and he doesn't really care about the contents, but Mao only laughs and comments that Subaru must've actually been trying really hard, to which Subaru quickly changes the subject.
Mao often refers to Subaru as a star that shines so bright that someone like Mao could never hope to reach him. In contrast, Subaru is always throwing his arms around Mao and telling him he loves him, which is Subaru's typical reaction with people he feels really comfortable around. Subaru's go-to phrase whenever talking about Mao is to laugh and say that everything's fine because "Sally can do anything!"

Tatsumi Kazehaya[]

Yuzuru Fushimi[]

Enstars![]

Fellow classmates and good friends. Yuzuru knows of Mao both through class and the student council, and they both get along quite well, despite their units being enemies. Yuzuru describes Mao as rather pessimistic, and has disagreed with Mao when he stated himself as inferior to Eichi during the Operetta show[14]. He also believes that Mao involves himself too much in difficult and troublesome situations, such as being both part of Trickstar and a member of the student council at the same time.
Mao gets along with Yuzuru very well, and even invites him to one of Trickstar's practices. Yuzuru ends up bringing Trickstar watermelon refreshments, which he finds very surprising and thoughtful[15]. Mao personally believes that despite being nimble himself, he doesn't think he'll ever be able to reach Yuzuru's level[16]. Around halfway through his second year, Mao switches to calling Yuzuru by his given name.

Enstars!![]

Fellow classmates and members of the student council.

Graduates[]

Chiaki Morisawa[]

Enstars![]

Chiaki is the captain of the Basketball Club. Though Mao doesn't seem to dislike Chiaki's personality entirely like Subaru does, he has warned others, including Yuzuru, about Chiaki's "skinship." Chiaki once came to Mao's house at 6 AM to pick him up for the sports festival.

Izumi Sena[]

Enstars![]

Mao and Izumi meet during Checkmate, where Izumi scolds Mao for not taking better care of Ritsu. Izumi says that childhood friends who still get along during high school are precious (foreshadowing Izumi and Makoto's relationship at that time).
In Close Encounter, Izumi says that he doesn't hate guys like Mao because it wouldn’t be bad if there's someone as easy to boss around as him. However, Mao's complete deference to other people still catches Izumi off guard, as Izumi doesn't understand how someone could disregard their own pride and bow to others as easily as Mao does without hesitation.
Mao remarks that Izumi exudes cold vibes even though he is smiling, and he's almost used to it by the time of Close Encounter.

Enstars!![]

Izumi shares a room in the Starmony Dorm with Mao. Like the other members of their dorm, Izumi scolds Mao for working too hard and not taking better care of himself.

Enstars!![]

Keito Hasumi[]

Enstars![]

Fellow members of the Student Council. Keito has high hopes for Mao, and often referred to him as the successor of the Student Council President, despite Mao seeming to have no intention in taking the responsibility.
During the Setsubun Festival, Keito reveals that he is afraid Mao will dislike him, and says that he plans to tell Mao everything eventually, "everything" implying to be the events that occurred in the past, including DEADMANS.[17]
In Daikagura, Kuro tells Mao that Keito talks about his "cute underclassman he keeps an eye out for" often, and really happily, too, so much that it kind of makes Kuro jealous. Mao is a little embarrassed to know how highly Keito thinks of him, and vows to try extra hard to live up to Keito's expectations as a result.

Enstars!![]

Fellow members of the shuffle unit Ring.A.Bell and the circle Manga Club.
Even though Keito has graduated and is no longer a student council member, it is shown that Keito still checks up on Mao[18], making sure he's not overworking himself and not putting all of the student council work on his shoulders since he doesn't want Mao to end up like him.
(Moon of Fresh Blood) Keito Hasumi CG

Keito calling Mao to check up on him

However, Mao doesn't want to bother his already-graduated upperclassman, so he tends to not ask for too much help from Keito. Mao once said that just hearing Keito's voice through phone alone was enough to make him feel relieved as a way to reassure Keito that Mao and the student council were doing okay.

Kuro Kiryu[]

Enstars![]

Enstars!![]

Kuro shares a room in the Starmony Dorm with Mao. Kuro once helped fixing Mao's sleeve button in the morning shortly before heading to school, noting that helping the troubled Mao reminded him of the hectic mornings he had with his little sister.[19] Since they both have a little sister, Kuro describes themselves as having a "connection", and often asks for Mao's opinions about things regarding his little sister, from one older brother to another.

Nagisa and Mao first meet in Revenge Match, where Nagisa calls Mao ordinary and replaceable in Trickstar, saying that Mao is a flashlight among stars and there's nothing special about him at all. This affects Mao deeply as he already feels like an imposter in his unit, just a normal boy trying to keep up with his much more talented friends who he believes shine brighter than he could hope to reach.
Later, Mao accepts Nagisa's criticism in stride and vows to become the brightest flashlight he can possibly be.
Despite Nagisa's hurtful words, Mao has never held it against him, thinking Nagisa was only speaking the truth. Nagisa, in turn, develops a faint respect for Mao and says that he's excited to see where Mao goes next.

Rei Sakuma[]

Enstars![]

Rei and Mao are friendly with each other since Mao is Ritsu's childhood friend, and they often joke around together about Ritsu when he was younger. Rei was also the one who helped Mao introspect about being a double agent, and encouraged him to choose between the Student Council and Trickstar. Later, when detailing to Trickstar the history between the Five Eccentrics and the student council, Rei tries to ease the burden he put on Mao by telling him he doesn't feel any resentment towards the student council. However, Mao only feels guiltier as a member of the student council instead, perhaps aiding him in his decision to side fully with Trickstar[20]. In the drama CD, shortly afterwards, Rei thanks Mao for taking care of Ritsu.
They later show to have developed a trust in each other. This has been reflected in Rei asking Mao to take care of Ritsu, as well as Mao approaching Rei for advice after having a fight prior to Band Ensemble[21]. Rei has acknowledged this trust and has thanked Mao for relying on him, much like how he relies on Mao.

Enstars!![]

Fellow members of the circle, Band BB.
In one of Mao's idol stories, it's revealed that Rei purposefully tried to distance himself from Mao when they were younger as he knew how possessive and jealous Ritsu could be when it came to Mao. However, Rei starts to let his guard down since Rei and Mao are in the same circle together. When Ritsu finds out Rei and Mao are alone together and Rei is teaching Mao how to play the piano, which is considered Ritsu's instrument, Ritsu abruptly tells Mao not to move, hangs up the phone, and spams Rei's cell with aggressive texts saying, "I will never forgive you," as he rushes to the music room to interrupt them. Rei is quick to flee the scene for his own safety, and Mao stays behind to placate Ritsu's temper.
