Quick Answers

Who is Mademoiselle? Why is Shu doing ventriloquism? toggle section
If you ask Shu Itsuki about his ventriloquism, he will deny being a ventriloquist. This is because Mademoiselle isn't a make-believe character, but a result of Shu having a dissociative disorder, Mademoiselle being a member of his system and strongly identifying with Shu's beloved antique doll. Shu is very protective of Mademoiselle, letting very few touch her. Most of the cast treat Mademoiselle as a completely separate entity, greeting her separately and sometimes holding conversations with her. Although she often accompanies Shu, she is not always by his side. However, she is described by Shu as always living in his heart.

What is the origin of the Mademoiselle doll? toggle section
The Mademoiselle doll is an original creation of a dollmaker friend that Shu's grandfather had met during his time abroad in France. She was an incredibly skilled dollmaker who created dolls as a private hobby, and would reproduce natural items as dolls in life-like detail. Shu's grandfather saw her work and became enamored with it, and they forged a friendship. She created two "Mademoiselle" dolls, one for herself, and one for Shu's grandfather to take back to Japan with him. Shu personally believes that the doll exists as a memory, a symbol of the happiness they shared together.

Why is Mademoiselle more present in older stories? toggle section
Mademoiselle is more present in older stories typically because Shu required her assistance more often than he does now. During his 3rd year at Yumenosaki, he struggled consistently in voicing his feelings, and Mademoiselle would often present herself to aid him. As Shu regained confidence and his emotions stabilized, he found himself capable of communicating more easily, and as a result she typically remains silent.

Appearance[]

Mademoiselle is a small, petite doll with long, blonde hair and emerald eyes. She has multiple outfits that Shu made for her, but frequently wears one made to match the Yumenosaki Academy school uniform. During the warmer months in Enstars!!, she wears a blue dress and hat to match Shu's casual spring-summer outfit.

Personality[]

Mademoiselle is rather doting, but has a mischevious side, speaking for Shu against his will at times and teasing him to others. Kuro has remarked in the past that Mademoiselle's way of speaking resembles his mother's, which displeases him.[2] Mademoiselle has a tendency to keep to herself and use the antique doll that's known to represent her as a vessel, but doesn't necessarily exist within the doll as she's proven herself capable of speaking without it. She most often speaks to Mika, but in Neverland, she silences herself from speaking with Shu when Mika arrives, stating that she feels there isn't much chance for her to speak when he's around.

Trivia[]

  • Being an antique doll, Shu dislikes having her being touched, as he is afraid she will break.[3]
  • Mademoiselle usually addresses others using their first name, adding either -kun or -chan to the end of it.
  • Natsume has stated that Shu and Mademoiselle operate with a psychological mechanism identical to Dissociative Identity Disorder.[4]
    • Akira stated that the reason Mademoiselle does not speak in reminiscence events such as Marionette is because she was created due to Shu splitting as a result of the shock from Valkyrie's downfall, and as such didn't exist before then.[5] Natsume explains that Shu "split a part of himself and entrusted it to Mademoiselle" due to this shock.[4]
    • Shu and Mademoiselle lack dissociative amnesia.
    • In Machina, Shu and Mademoiselle have been shown to be able to communicate without the presence of the doll, with Shu responding out-loud to Mademoiselle.
  • Shu has stated in Neverland that he makes all of his own clothes and uses the same fabric to create Mademoiselle's clothes, ensuring that the two match.
    • He also made the sunglasses that she wears in Neverland.
