This is Hokuto Hidaka from STARMAKER PRODUCTION. The unit I belong to is Trickstar... and as you might have noticed, my father is the super idol, Seiya Hidaka. While I can't help but be compared, I'm my own person through and through. I want you to see me as my own idol, Hokuto Hidaka. MaoHokuto is the leader of Trickstar, and he's the kind of guy whose strength and weakness is both that he's overly serious. But he is a very reliable leader, and even when we're lost, he can easily guide us in the right direction. He comes off as straight-laced, but he's really a nice guy! ♪ He's actually quite shockingly a grandma's boy, which makes him quite approachable. And it seems that his parents have been getting more and more involved in the idol industry lately, too~? Hahah, I'm going to have to do my best too so I'm not left behind by Hokuto! ♪ Well then, I have practice to go to now. See ya~! ♪[2]
Ensemble Stars! Introduction
Calm, cool, and collected, Hokuto is a hard-working perfectionist. He hates when his pace is disturbed. Though he might come across as cold to his noisy classmates at first, he values his friends. He's kind and will explain things thoroughly to those who don't understand, but he's also slightly air-headed.
He likes simple sweets, and his overall tastes are somewhat old-fashioned. The eccentric theater club president Wataru Hibiki gives Hokuto a hard time with his crazy antics, but Hokuto is striving to organize proper club activities. The leader of the unit Trickstar.
Appearance[]
Hokuto is of average height and has deep blue eyes. His black hair is smooth and short, cut just below his ears.
On stage, Hokuto wears Trickstar's uniform, which includes a blue plaid jacket worn over a white shirt and black pants. The jacket’s sleeves are rolled up to three-quarter length, revealing black cuffs with a golden stripe. The lapels as well as the collar and shoulders of the jacket are black, detailed with golden trimming on the edges. Golden tassels fall from his left shoulder. On his right, golden bands connect his shoulder to a four-pointed star on his lapel. He wears a sky-blue belt, with the end of it falling over as it has not been properly tucked into a belt loop. A blue bandana hangs from his belt and drapes down at his right side. It has a black stripe along the bottom and is dotted with tiny silver sparkles. Over that, a golden beaded chain rests on his hips. An outlined star design is attached to the chain as it hangs on his right side. A thick blue stripe runs along the sides of his pant legs, with the ends being tucked into his high-top sneakers. The sneakers are black and grey with blue detailing, including a Velcro strap over his sky-blue laces. Hokuto wears a black fingerless glove on his right hand and blue and white bangles on his left. He also wears a gold necklace of a four-pointed star— a reference to the four members of Trickstar.
On warmer days, his casual outfit consists of a navy short-sleeved button-down shirt with black skinny jeans. The shirt has thin gray vertical stripes, black buttons, and is layered over a gray T-shirt. These are tucked into his pants. Hokuto wears a white belt and a small silver necklace with a tiny diamond-shaped dangling detail. He also wears a wristwatch and a thin silver band on his left hand. His lace-up shoes are black.
On colder days, his casual outfit consists of a gray turtleneck beneath a white jacket. The jacket has two pockets over both sides of the chest and has a few thin lines to accentuate segments of the jacket. He wears this with a thin silver necklace and dark navy pants.

He wears the school uniform with the top button of his white shirt undone and his jacket is buttoned up. He also wears a blue tie and brown loafers.
On stage, Hokuto wears Trickstar's uniform, which includes a blue plaid jacket worn over a white V-neck shirt and matching blue plaid pants. The jacket’s sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, revealing white cuffs. The lapels as well as the sides and shoulders of the jacket are black, detailed with four tiny golden stars on the edge of the left lapel and golden trimming on the shoulders. He wears a sky-blue strap with a white stripe attached to the left side of his sky-blue belt. A black bandana is tied around his waist and drapes down at his right side. It has a white stripe along the bottom and is dotted with tiny silver sparkles. Over that, multiple thin golden bands rest on his hips, one which has an outlined star design attached to the right side. He wears blue high-top sneakers with white laces. The outside of the shoes features a star motif with the name "Trickstar" embroidered underneath it. He wears a black fingerless glove on his left hand and a blue wristband on his right. Hokuto also wears a gold necklace featuring an abstract design which may be interpreted as a combination of the letters "T" and "S" (from Trickstar), with a star cut out in the middle.
In the previous school year— Hokuto’s first year—, his hair was slightly longer than his current style. Part of the hair that had framed the left side of his face was tied into a small braid, reaching just past his chin.
Personality[]
At a first glance, Hokuto is the cool and calm leader of Trickstar. He is a good student in terms of his grades, and is described by those around him — the members of Trickstar, his classmates and even his teachers — as incredibly serious. He takes his studies and his dream to surpass his parents to become both a famous idol and successful actor completely seriously, and has the self-confidence to back himself up.
With his friends, Hokuto has a hard time understanding the jokes Subaru and Makoto make, and the jokes he makes himself are said to be hard to understand. His sense of humour is slightly skewed, and despite his continuous study of manzai, he doesn't seem to be able to understand the boke's use of puns and punchlines, but often plays the tsukkomi role without realising. Despite this, he has also (unintentionally) assumed the role of boke on multiple occasions. He has been described as airheaded, and this combined with his seriousness causes him to misinterpret things in a wild or unfortunate fashion. He’s very honest and tends to speak what is on his mind frankly, and thus his earnest and serious reactions, rather than finishing the punchline, seem to be what people around him find funny.
Still, he is loyal to and loves his friends dearly, and is someone who will fiercely stand up for them. On the other hand, he is stubborn and somewhat guarded with those he dislikes or finds hard to handle, and can lose his cool when confronted by people like Eichi or his father, Seiya. When faced with people who threaten his pride or his friends, he can become surprisingly hot-blooded and ends up picking fights or accepting challenges without thinking things through.
His perfectionist nature stems from his upbringing as a thoroughbred of the entertainment world — because he has had such high expectations placed on his shoulders from a young age, he expects highly of himself and is aware of the consequences of making mistakes on his future. This is what leads him to be swayed from his path in the DDD, as he was expected to succeed no matter what. Thus, he is incredibly hard-working, and wholeheartedly believes his hard work will pay off if he continues at his pace. However, he tends to misinterpret instructions, and his confidence that he's right tends to work against him.
Overall, Hokuto is someone who is earnestly true to himself first and foremost, who works hard to achieve his dreams wholeheartedly, and whose comicality is hidden by his serious demeanour. He truly loves his friends and does his best to support them, aiming for his dreams with them by his side.
Etymology[]
The name Hokuto means "the Big Dipper", which seems to be connected to his role as leader of the unit Trickstar. The two characters in Hokuto's last name mean "ice, hail" (氷) (hi) and "hawk, falcon" (鷹) (taka/daka) respectively. His last name is likely a reference to the Kenji Miyazawa story 'The Nighthawk Star'.

Hokuto's father is Seiya Hidaka, and his mother is a famous actress. He doesn't get along well with his parents. Hokuto lives with his maternal grandparents, and is specifically close with his grandmother. Despite his love and admiration for them when he was young, his relationship with his parents has become strained, due to them not being present during his childhood.
Trivia[]
- Hokuto's autograph consists of only his first name, rendered in Roman letters. The style is simple and straightforward.
- During his second year, Hokuto was the class president of Class 2-A. He is currently the class president of Class 3-A.
- Hokuto's parents had him learn ballroom dancing [3] and the violin [4] as a child.
- Hokuto won the first character popularity rankings.
- Hokuto prefers Japanese food over Western food.
- Hokuto's previous voice actor, Yoshimasa Hosoya, went on hiatus due to a throat condition. He was permanently replaced by his current voice actor, Tomoaki Maeno.[5]
